Survival In The Arctic

Author's note- David is on a journey to save his girlfriend Zanna from polar bears

Imagine being in the frozen arctic where no one wants to go outside ever, well in Fire Star that is how David Rain must feel, very cold. He has gotten to go up to the arctic to learn about ice samples and polar bears. Readers will learn that the decisions will help us succeed or fail  is one of the themes, because he has to choose to go back to America or stay in Canada, to do research. Another one is survival skill because he has to survive many things.

These are all major themes because he uses all three of them in the story. He has to go back to the arctic to rescue Lucy Pennykettle from Gwilanna Lucy’s evil aunt. Who is a sibyl/witch who wants to bring back a real life dragon from the dead. Plus she wants the tear of the last real dragon that ever lived, Gawain.

Survival is a theme too, because David has to survive from a polar bear attack when Zanna and himself go to an arctic trading post to get supplies for everyone at the arctic base, where they stay for this arctic trip. So when the polar bears attacked David ran up to one of the bears to protect it from a gunshot. Even though the bear did get shot it didn’t die because it only got a flesh wound in the shoulder. And he still has to survive from the sybil Gwilanna and all of her special powers too.

Another book with all three themes is Warriors Dawn: By Erin Hunter. It is about 4 clans of wild cats going on a adventure to a new home when their old one is destroyed. To get there they will need their survival skills to help them live in the new territories, some determination so that they don’t give up at all, and how to make the right decisions so that they don’t lose too many cats to starvation. David has to use all three of these things in his own way in his adventure in the arctic in Fire Star.
